Azure Interview Questions and Answers – PART 1

Q 1 What is ARM?

Ans ARM is an abbreviation for Azure Resource Manager. It first announced with the new Azure portal “portal.azure.com” at Built 2014. It simply provides new set of API’s that are more advance, cheaper and efficient in deploying, configuring and managing Azure resources. The old Azure Classic portal limited users for deploying, configuring and managing single resources at a particular instance, whereas the ARM allows the users to simultaneously manage multiple resources.

Q 2 What is NSG?

Ans Azure NSG or Network Security Group is the solution that Azure offers to network admins to manage network communications to and from various different resources. It is a sequential collection of rules that an administrator has described in a planned structure to allow or deny network traffic. NSG provides stateful security, i.e. if you open a specific port for outbound traffic, you don’t need to allow inbound port for the returning response.

Q 3 What is Availability Set?

Ans An availability set is a feature that Azure offers for highly available VM’s to be logically grouped and systematically placed on different physical hosts, such that if a given host or the network or any other resource hosting the server fails, still the other VM’s that are the participant in the availability set would have no impact.

Q 4 What is Azure Storage Account?

Ans With Azure Storage Account, Azure has brought all types of storage services under a single umbrella. These storage services are used by other Azure Services. Azure storage account includes all azure storage services such as Azure Tables, Azure Blob, Azure Files, Azure Disks and Azure Queues. Grouping of these storage services, makes it simple for admins to manage them from a single console. Azure Storage services are considered one of the best storage services offered in the cloud segment. Azure storage services are :

1.Highly Available and Durable: Azure offers redundancy, customer can opt to store their data across multiple devices, or even mirror their data across geographical boundaries in-between multiple data centers. This ensures data is continuously available even if a device fails or a disaster causing failure of a given data center.

2.Secure: Data stored in Azure, is encrypted if opted by the customer. Azure also offers user to have a granular control on who can access what, by configuring security policies.

3. Scalable: Azure has a massive storage that is billed as it is consumed. Azure storage services are specifically designed to deliver massive performance for hundreds and thousands of users on demand.

Q 5 What is Azure Bastion?

Ans Azure Bastion is a service offered via Azure ARM Portal, is fully managed, provides seamless and secure SSH (Secure Shell) and RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) connectivity to virtual machines that are provisioned without Public IP Address. Bastion doesn’t need any agent to be installed in the Azure VM. Bastions allows privilege users to initiate remote session through browser, without depending on any other application.

Q 6 What is Azure Resource Group?

Ans Users can create a variety of resources in Azure Subscription. These resources are Azure VM’s, Azure vNets, Azure Storage Accounts, etc. These resources are registered in a container called as Resource Group. These Resource Groups allows us to logically collect resources meant for a specific purpose under the same umbrella. A resource can only be registered in a single resource group. With the help of resource group, one can easily configure identical properties on a group of resources such as, Resource Locks, Access Control Policies, etc. Resources of the same resource group, are logically grouped, i.e. their physical regions can be different from each other.

Q 7 What is Azure Virtual Machine Scale Set?

Ans Azure Virtual Machine Scale Set is an Azure managed high availability solution offered by Microsoft Azure. With the changing demand of the application, scale set can dynamically add or remove instances of the scale set. It provides high availability to both state-full and state-less applications across fault domains and availability zones at large scale. When the demand reduces, it automatically reduces the number of VM’s of the scale set, thus optimising the cost. Organizations can scale from a hand full machines to hundreds and thousands of VM’s in just minutes, either if the demand increases or configured schedule.

Q 8 What is Azure Fault Domain and Update Domain?

Ans Fault Domain: An Azure fault domain is a collection of host servers that belong to a group of racks that share the same power and networking. An Azure availability zone consists multiple such fault domain, so that if the network or power to one of the fault domain fails, then the entire availability zone does not crash. Highly available VM’s should be distributed across different fault domains.

Update Domain: An Azure update domain is a logical collection of servers that may share same or different fault domains. Servers belonging to an update domain are updated (general update or security patch) at the same time. While updating servers may not be available for some time, causing some of our highly available workload VM’s to go down for some time with them. Azure availability zones have multiple update domains. We should always try to diversify our highly available VM’s across multiple fault domains and update domains in an availability set.

Q 9 What is Azure Blob Storage?

Ans An Azure Blob (binary large object) is object class storage service offered by Microsoft Azure in Azure Storage Account. Its optimised and most suitable for storing massive amounts of unstructured data in the cloud. Blob Storage is often used by developers to stream audio or videos, or serve documents or images directly to the web browser. Blob Storage is also used by Azure customers for archiving, backup or disaster recovery or restore. Blob Storage is based on SaaS (Storage as a Service) Model. Blob Storage offers extremely high throughput, very large capacity, best security that complies and satisfies the needs of most of the organizations, and yet it’s simple to use and implement.

Q 10 What is Azure App Service?

Ans Azure App Service allows developers to develop, build, deploy, test or scale web applications or API’s. It works with Java, Python, PHP, Node.js, .Net or .Net Core. One can deploy and run code directly in to Windows or Linux operating systems or even run respective containers in Azure app service. App service is a managed service and Azure maintains infrastructure, patching, scaling and security. App service has built-in CI/CD (Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery) and zero downtime deployments for your production web applications. App service is being used by Azure customers to host more than 2 million production applications and websites. App service has a massive capacity and already handles more than 60 billion requests per day.
